Such persons can communicate in English language comfortably in most day to day situations, including their workplace.  While they have an effective command of the language, they may communicate with some inaccuracies and may misunderstand some facts. They can use and understand fairly complex language in familiar situations. To prove you have competent English, provide evidence:
  • that you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, with your application
  • or
  • In the period of 3 years before you are invited to apply for the visa, you have obtained the required score in one of the acceptable English language tests mentioned below:

They can generally handle communication related to their own field in a fairly decent manner.   To prove you have vocational English, show evidence that:
  • You are a citizen of and hold a valid passport from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland
  • or
  • In the period of 3 years before you are invited to apply for the visa, you have obtained the required score in one of the acceptable English language tests mentioned below:

Functional

The person can understand more basic phrases and expressions in a normal daily life situation. They communicate slowly and can ask/respond to simple questions about personal details, asking for directions, introducing themselves, etc.   To prove you have functional English, provide evidence that:

  • you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland
    or
  • you completed a degree, a higher degree, a diploma or a trade certificate in an institution in or outside Australia that required at least two years of full-time study and all instructions were in English
    or
  • you undertook your education at one of the following levels:
