English Language Tests Accepted By The Department of Home Affairs in Australia

Overview

It is important for all skilled, employer nominated and certain investor/entrepreneur visa applicants to meet the English language criteria specified for these visa categories.

We have given below a synopsis of the English language tests that are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs in Australia for your reference.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

IELTS is the oldest and most popular English language test for skilled migrants and international students keen to pursue higher studies in Australia or any other native English-speaking country. An IELTS test comprises four (4) modules namely reading, writing, listening and speaking to assess an applicant’s proficiency in English language. IELTS is a global organisation with approved testing centres in most major cities around the world and we recommend that you visit www.ielts.org for further details.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Traditionally, TOEFL was the go-to English test for migrants and international students keen to relocate to North America but it is not an acceptable test for Australia as well. TOEFL is also available as an internet-based test (iBT) can be taken at registered TOEFL iBT providers all over the world. TOEFL is a global organisation with approved testing centres in most major cities around the world and we suggest that you visit www.ets.org/toefl for further details.

The Pearson Test of English – Academic (PTE)

PTE is a recent entrant in the English testing arena and became very popular amongst the skilled migrants and international students alike in a short span of few years. PTE is a computer based English language test and assesses the applicants’ ability in English language’s four (4) core modules of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The PTE Academic test is also approved by the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs and we suggest that you visit www.pearsonpte.com for further details.

The Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

Similar to IELTS and PTE – Academic, CAE test also assesses candidates’ reading, writing, listening and speaking ability in multiple testing centres in over 130 countries. Unlike the other tests, CAE can take up to 4 weeks to announce the results. Please visit www.cambridgeenglish.org for further details.

Occupational English Test (OET)

Though OET has been around for a fairly long time and it is one of the most respected English language tests, it mainly focuses on the language proficiency of healthcare workers. The Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs has been accepting OET since long and it provides reliable assessment of all four language components i.e., listening, reading, writing and speaking. We suggest you visit www.occupationalenglishtest.org to find out further details about the OET test in case you are looking to migrate to Australia as a healthcare worker.
